The Perfect 7-Day Morocco Itinerary for Families
A 7-day Morocco itinerary with kids: Marrakech, the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, the Sahara dunes and back, with family-friendly driving days.
- Day 1–2: Marrakech (souks, gardens, cooking class). Day 3: Atlas Mountains and Ait Benhaddou.
- Day 4: Dades or Todra. Day 5: Sahara at Merzouga with camels and a camp night.
- Day 6–7: back towards Marrakech via the valleys, or finish in Fes.
- For toddlers, swap the Sahara for the Agafay desert and the coast at Essaouira.
A week in Morocco with kids
Seven days is the most popular length for a first family trip. It is enough to see Marrakech, cross the Atlas Mountains and sleep in the Sahara, as long as the driving is split well. Here is the plan we recommend for children from about 5 years old, followed by a gentler version for younger children.
Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech
Private transfer from the airport with child seats, check in to a family riad, and a relaxed evening. If you arrive early, a first walk to the main square at sunset gives children a taste of the city.
Day 2: Marrakech for families
A morning in the souks with a family guide, with stops at workshops. Lunch on a rooftop. Pool and rest in the afternoon. Late afternoon at Jardin Majorelle, or a family cooking class.
Day 3: Over the Atlas to Ait Benhaddou
Cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops for views and a Berber village. Explore the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a famous film location, and continue to the Dades Valley for the night. Total driving: about 5 to 6 hours with stops.
Day 4: Dades and Todra
A short walk in the Todra Gorge between high red walls, where children can paddle in the stream. Continue to Merzouga, ride camels to the camp at sunset, and spend the night under the stars.
Day 5: The Sahara
Wake for the sunrise on the dunes. A slow morning: sandboarding, a visit to a nomad family, music in Khamlia. Some families choose a second night in the desert; others start the drive back to the valleys.
Days 6 and 7: Back to Marrakech
Drive back through the valley of roses and Ouarzazate, with a night on the way so no day is too long, and arrive in Marrakech for a last evening and the flight home. Alternatively, end the trip in Fes and fly home from there.
A gentler week for toddlers
- Days 1–3: Marrakech, with pool time every afternoon
- Day 4: Agafay desert, camel ride and camp night (one hour away)
- Days 5–7: Essaouira by the sea, with beach time and the port
Tip: With toddlers, fewer hotel changes are the secret of a happy week. Three bases are plenty.
