The Best Time to Visit Morocco with Kids
Month by month: when to go to the Sahara, the mountains, Marrakech and the coast with children, and how to use school holidays.
- Best overall: March to May and late September to November, with warm days and cool nights.
- Summer (June to September): very hot in Marrakech and the desert; better for the coast and mountains.
- Winter (December to February): sunny days, cold nights, snow in the High Atlas; great for Marrakech.
- School holidays (Easter, October half-term, Christmas) are popular: book early.
Morocco through the year
Morocco has very different climates in one country: the Atlantic coast is mild all year, Marrakech is hot in summer and cool in winter, the High Atlas has snow in winter, and the Sahara is very hot in summer and cold at night in winter. The best time for your family depends on where you go and how your children deal with heat.
Spring: March, April and May
Spring is the favourite season for many families. Days are warm and sunny, nights are fresh, the countryside is green and the almond and orange trees flower. The desert is pleasant, with warm days and cool nights. Easter holidays are busy, so book early.
- Marrakech: warm days, perfect for walking
- Desert: comfortable, great for camels and camps
- Atlas: green valleys, snow on the high peaks until April or May
- Coast: mild, sometimes windy
Summer: June, July and August
Summer is the only time some families can travel. Marrakech and the desert are very hot, often above 40°C in July and August. It is still possible with good planning: early starts, pools, siestas and camel rides at sunset.
The best summer plan mixes cooler places: the Atlas Mountains (much cooler than Marrakech), the coast at Essaouira (fresh and windy), and a short desert visit in the evening. Read our guide to sun and heat with kids before a summer trip.
Autumn: September, October and November
From late September, the heat drops and autumn becomes one of the best seasons for families. October half-term is a very good time for the desert, with warm days and starry nights. Dates are harvested in the oases in autumn, and children love seeing them.
Winter: December, January and February
Winter has many sunny days, especially in Marrakech, but nights are cold everywhere and very cold in the desert and mountains. Riads can feel chilly inside: ask for heating. Snow in the High Atlas is a surprise many children love. Christmas and New Year are busy; book well in advance.
Tip: In winter, pack warm pyjamas, a hat and gloves for the desert night, even if you wear T-shirts during the day.
Ramadan and holidays
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. The dates change each year (in 2027, it falls around February and March). Travel is still possible and interesting: restaurants for visitors stay open, and evenings are festive. Some sites close earlier and the pace is slower. Ask us how Ramadan affects your dates.
